Ruben Amorim has admitted that Manchester United now face a tough fight against relegation after their latest defeat dragged them closer to the relegation zone.

United lost 2-0 against Newcastle at Old Trafford last night, a result that leaves them in 14th place and just seven points above third-bottom Ipswich.

The terrible performance means Amorim has made the worst start of any United manager in more than 100 years, losing five of their first eight league games.

Still recovering from their fifth defeat in their last six games in all competitions, United next face runaway leaders Liverpool and Jamie Carragher issued a dire warning that they are showing “relegation form”, partly blaming Amorim.

Speaking after the match, the embattled coach admitted he was embarrassed.

'It's my fault too. I think the team is not improving. “I'm a little lost right now,” Amorim said. 'It's a bit embarrassing to be Manchester United manager and lose a lot of games. But we have to face difficult times in everyone's lives.'

Asked if United were in danger of going down, Amorim added: “That's very clear, so we have to fight.” “It's a really difficult time, one of the most difficult times in Manchester United's history and we have to approach it honestly.”

Goals from Alexander Isak and Joelinton condemned United to further misery, while Ipswich's 2-0 win against Chelsea reduced their lead over the bottom three.

“I am responsible,” Amorim said. 'I don't like coming here and making excuses. I think people are tired of excuses in this club. I think our club needs a shock and we have to understand it. “It's a very difficult moment and we have to fight for the next game.”

The 39-year-old has, however, vowed to stick to his 3-4-3 system and lamented the lack of time available to practice his tactics with his players during training.

'You can't go back. We have to keep pressing,' he said. 'We had four training (sessions) in total. I know what you are trying to achieve but it is very clear, I am here for my idea and I will continue with my idea until the end.

'I change something tactically in each game. You (the media) focus on three defenders, I change something in each game. If I didn't believe then I would change, I'm not stubborn, I just believe in something and persevere in it.'

'We don't have the basis behind positioning and the way of playing to face difficult moments. When you have that, you have something to endure in the game and the players suffered a lot. “Newcastle is a better team.”

Gary Neville is also concerned that United have been dragged into the relegation mire.

“He (Amorim) was determined not to change, but he must be suffering deep inside,” he said on Sky Sports. 'I'm worried too. It was really gloomy. That first half hour was difficult to watch for a United fan.

'There is no doubt: performances and results have deteriorated in recent weeks. Some of the players in the system find it very difficult to have confidence.

“The concern is that they will be drawn into a fight near the bottom.

'I think they have a lot to do and that is to be very, very kind. I don't think this group of players has the quality that (Erik) Ten Hag, Ole (Gunnar Solskjaer), José Mourinho or Louis van Gaal have had.

“They weren't good enough for Manchester United in those periods, but they were better teams and squads than they are today.”
