French rugby international Hassane Kolingar has revealed the seemingly innocent act he believes led to his heart attack aged just 26.

Kolingar has recently returned to playing for his club Racing 92, but just a few months ago the prop feared his career was over when he suffered cardiac arrest at a team-mate's wedding.

“When I arrived (at the wedding), I put snus in my gum and sat waiting for the bride and groom,” Kolingar told Midi Olympique.

Snus, sometimes called smokeless tobacco or “dip,” is a bag of moist, powdered tobacco that is typically placed in the mouth between the lip and gum and releases nicotine into the bloodstream.

“It's not illegal, it contains tobacco, but I think it's really shit,” Kolingar said.

'At one point, I started laughing and immediately felt pressure in my chest. My heart was beating very hard and I was sweating a lot; seeing stars

The football star (pictured wearing a heart monitor) said it “felt like someone was sticking needles in my head” during the ordeal.

'I thought he was simply having a hypoglycemic episode and, in order not to ruin the ceremony, I stepped aside. My eardrums were pounding, it felt like someone was sticking needles into my head.

“I was in very bad pain and my eyes rolled back in my head,” Kolingar added. “I was about to go into cardiac arrest.”

The young athlete suffered tachycardia, which occurs when the heart rate increases.

As a result, Kolingar required a major operation to clean a scar on his heart.

'As my pulse didn't go down, the firefighters put me in a coma. To wake me up they gave me four electric shocks,' he said.

'The objective of the operation was to clean the scar that I had on my heart since I was born.

“To do that, (the surgeon) had to cause another cardiac arrest.”
