Canada does not agree with the suggestion of the president of the United States, Donald Trump, that Russia joins the G7, but Moscow says that the idea is not a beginning anyway.
The Moscow ambassador to Canada, Oleg Stepanov, says that “Russia has no interest” in joining the group of seven, which he calls an “obsolete structure.”
Russia used to be part of what was known as the group of eight until other members suspended it in 2014 after the invasion of Ukraine.

Trump says it was a mistake and states that the current war could have been avoided if Russia had preserved his membership, which he says that it should now be restored.
Canada presides over the G7 this year and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mélanie Joly, said this weekend that Canada firmly opposes Russia to restore in the group.
She spoke after the conservative leader Pierre Poilievre and the liberal leadership candidate Chrystia Freeland rejected the idea.
