Sports broadcasting legend Greg Gumbel has died.
The family of the long-time studio host announced this in a statement CBS On Friday he passed away “peacefully, surrounded by lots of love, after a courageous battle with cancer.”
They added: “Greg approached his illness the way you would expect him to, with stoicism, grace and positivity. He leaves a legacy of love, inspiration and dedication for over 50 extraordinary years in the sports broadcasting industry; and his iconic voice will never be forgotten.”
“Greg’s memory will forever be remembered by his family, his dearest friends, colleagues and all who loved him.”
Gumbel was a mainstay when it came to sports on CBS – he hosted NFL games for decades… and also hosted the network's annual NCAA tournament coverage for years.
Last season was actually the first March Madness season that Gumbel had missed since 1997. His colleagues said at the time that he had stayed away from the game “for family health reasons.”

“It’s a bit surreal that he’s not to my right – he’s been there for a few decades.” Clark Kellogg he said while previewing the 2024 tournament last spring. “I pray and hope, Greg, that you actually come back in 2025.”
Gumbel – the older brother of Bryant Gumbel – was 78 years old.
