A Swiss soccer club has paid tribute to one of its players after they were found dead in the waters of a Spanish port city.

The Spanish Police confirmed that Jakov Jelkic, 24, had been found on Monday in Alicante.

Jelkic had played for the Swiss team of the third FC Granges-Paccot division.

The 24 -year -old had played with the team in Spain last weekend and, according to the reports, joined his teammates in a nightclub in the Dock Levante area in Alicante.

His disappearance had been reported after not returning to the team of the team the next morning.

Cristian Plaza, a national police spokesman for Alicante, informed that a body had been completely identified after being discovered on Monday.

Plaza told the Spanish media that an investigation was launched, but Jelkic's death is currently being considered accidental, and the player is considered to fall into the sea and drowned.

The police spokesman declared that the cameras had seen Jelkic staggering from a nightclub near the port, 'having ingested some type of alcoholic beverage.'

FC Granges-Paccot has paid a tribute after Jelkic's death.

“With great sadness we knew from the death of Jakov,” reads a statement.

'Our thoughts are with his family, friends, teammates and all who knew him closely and far.

'Your memory will always be recorded in our hearts. A friend, a teammate, an inspiration for everyone.

'Rest in peace.'

Jelkic's family had issued messages on social networks in an attempt to locate him before confirmation of his death.
