A boxer has landed behind bars for a brutal assault on a referee in a suburban football match that began when the officer hit him with a side flag.

Adam Abdallah was filmed violently by the Khodr Yaghi party officer after an April 2023 match in Padstow, in southwest Sydney.

The incident began with a verbal altercation after the game, during which Mr. Yaghi hit the boxer in the head with the 40 cm flag that he was holding.

Initially restricted and taken by his friends, Abdallah then returned to balance the referee, landing a blow that left Mr. Yaghi wrinkled on the ground.

The 26 -year -old continued the attack, hitting and kicking the referee while lying in the grass trying to defend himself.

Abdallah grabbed a plastic chair to continue the assault, but was arrested by three men.

Mr. Yaghi was hospitalized as a result of the incident, losing four teeth and suffering two fractures in the jaw, which required surgery and the insertion of metal plates.

Abdallah declared himself guilty of a serious bodily damage charge in September and was imprisoned for at least a year and two months in the District Court of the Sydney Downney Center on Wednesday.

Judge Nicole Noman said that Yaghi instigated violence, but Abdallah then launched a “coward” attack that involved multiple blows that landed while the referee was helpless on the ground.

“This was an extreme and meaningless offensive that happened in public in a sports game,” he said.

There was a strong case of prosecution against the boxer because parts of the altercation had been filmed by others in the party, Judge Noman added.

“The footage shows his pleasure in hitting and kicking the victim,” he said.

While Abdallah had shown remorse, he also tried to appear as a victim and blamed Yaghi for what happened, Judge Noman said.

“He said his actions were excessive and inexcusable.”

Abdallah should not have been in the game since it had been forbidden months before by a separate incident.

The 26 -year -old lawyers argued that his diagnosed ADHD was behind the impulsive attack, but Judge Noman rejected that suggestion, and pointed out that he previously lived a life free of violence despite having the condition.

Abdallah had admitted that he was motivated by anger and the desire to face the referee, he said.

He also lied to the police after his arrest, including the claims that he could not remember the attack because he was shocked.

There was no medical evidence of any brain shock, said the judge.

Abdallah was ordered to remain behind bars for a maximum of two years and three months, expiring on April 24, 2027.

Its non -child period will expire on March 24, 2026.

Before the sheriff took him, Abdallah hugged members and followers of the family, some of whom cleaned the tears.
