Swindon Town's League Two clash with Crewe Alexandra was delayed 56 minutes after referees ruled conditions unplayable just four minutes into the game.
Matters initially began at 15:00 GMT, before referee Lee Swaby stopped play shortly afterwards, as a thick layer of fog descended on the County Ground.
The players quickly headed to their locker rooms, while it was reported that most of the fans remained on the ground waiting for the game to restart.
Conditions improved and were re-evaluated at 15:30, before the coaches returned to the touchline and it was announced that play would resume at 16:00.
Swindon manager Ian Holloway revealed that if the fog worsens or returns to the initial state it was in when play was first suspended, the game is likely to be cancelled.
“If this happens again we will have to cancel, it will be too dangerous,” he told BBC Radio Wiltshire, before the game restarted.
Fog at the County Ground caused a 56-minute delay in the League Two clash
Play resumed at 16:00 after initially starting an hour earlier, following a weather review.
“He fell right after kickoff. How it was is very different from how it is now. Let's try again out of respect for all of us here.
'I haven't seen anything like it (in my career). I don't know. Is the fog attracted to the players' body heat?
Moments before play began again, former Swindon defender Paul Bodin revealed how treacherous the conditions were but argued they were still playable.
He said: “It's very, very difficult to play in these conditions.
'If you are in the center of the field, you can now see both sides of the field.
'The linesman can see the other side. “If it keeps going like this, it's definitely playable.”
Saturday's match was one of only two League Two matches to start today after frost disrupted the schedule.
Eight games were scheduled, but six were suspended. These were: Grimsby Town v Notts County; Gillingham v Fleetwood; Carslile vs MK Dons; AFC Wimbledon vs Cheltenham; Port Vale v Barrow; and Accrington Stanley v Newport County.
Most fans reportedly remained at the 15,728-capacity ground despite the delay in proceedings.
The last match was rescheduled when Accrington faced Liverpool in the FA Cup, where the Reds won 4-0 at Anfield.
The only other League Two match to go ahead as planned was Walsall vs Tranmere earlier in the afternoon, which saw the hosts claim a 5-1 win at the Bescot Stadium.
