The Legend of the Australian surf Mick Fanning has revealed its own coping mechanisms when it comes to the death of its three older brothers.

Fanning, who won world titles in 2007, 2009 and 2013, lost his brother for the first time, with only 20 years after a car accident in Coolangatta in 1998.

The next was Peter Fanning, who was found dead in his Tweed Heads apartment at the end of 2015, with an enlarged heart derived from an ongoing medical condition.

He followed Fanning surviving a shark attack in South Africa months before when he competed in the J-Bay Open final.

Then, in March last year, Ed Fanning died in Madagascar, where he worked as a surf guide.

He suffered heart complications and died in the hospital.

“I always seek to talk about the good times, laughter,” Fanning told host Hugh Van Cuylenburg.

'We had some fun memories, a funny life together.

“I don't want to know about their deaths … I look back at many times I appreciate.”

Fanning, born in Penrith, also pointed out the sadness he feels for his parents Elizabeth and John, who have had to bury three of their children.

When Ed died in 2024, Fanning admitted that he endured some dark days.

“Life hits you with a deck from time to time,” he said at that time.

'It takes time to process. You need time to heal. It is definitely a trip.

Now the father of two children and in a stable relationship with his partner Breeana Randall, the great surf acknowledges that his family keeps him on the right path.

Fanning also knows that he cheated on death after the encounter with a great white shark in Jeffreys Bay almost a decade ago.

He is asked about the incident, where he fiercely hit the shark when the survival mode was launched, practically every day.

The epic festival that followed the final of J -Bay Open, mainly celebrating the fact that Fanning was alive, really felt like a wake.

I was so raw. Not only for me, but all those who were there on the beach that day, 'said Fanning.

'Surf is a giant family, so that is what it was. We almost lost one of the family.

'He felt like being my own wake because a minute everyone laughed and the next moment they all cried. “It was very special, but also such a strange moment.”
