Social media users were left stuck in a dead end after a family of Eagles fans traveled far and wide for their season finale against the New York Giants.
Hours before Sunday's highly anticipated matchup, NFLonFox's X account posted a photo of a family holding a sign expressing their excitement at seeing Saquon Barkley break the single-season rushing record.
“I traveled 1,000 miles to see Saquon break the record,” the sign said.
The account took advantage of the photo with a SpongeBob SquarePants meme, which said: 'How do we tell him?'
Barkley spent his first six seasons with the Giants, where he rushed for 5,211 yards and 35 touchdowns.
However, he infamously joined the rival Eagles this offseason and had a career-defining season in the City of Brotherly Love.
A family traveled 1,000 miles to see Saquon Barkley play, but he skipped the Giants game.
Since arriving in Philadelphia, Barkley has rushed for 2,005 yards. In addition to his yards, Barkley rushed for 13 touchdowns and received two this season.
While they were 101 yards away from breaking Eric Dickerson's record, the Eagles decided to rest Barkley and abandon hopes of breaking the record. Although news that Barkley had skipped the game was reported earlier in the week, the family apparently missed the headlines while planning their trip to East Rutherford.
'Oh no, didn't you see any football news this week or what?' a user commented on the post.
“Damn, they still have to travel 1,000 miles backwards,” a second reacted.
A third user suggested the family “should have respectfully downloaded a sports app.”
Other users alluded that the sign could have been a sarcastic joke rather than a product of misinformation.
However, the Eagles earned the 20-13 victory to finish their season with a 14-3 record. Quarterback Tanner McKee led the way for Philadelphia with 27 completions for 269 yards and two touchdowns.
The Eagles clinched the second seed in the NFC playoffs and will host the Green Bay Packers in a wild card game.
